Installing Mods

Installing mods for The Sims 4 is simple. Put the mods in the mods folder. There’s a few important details though.

Mods are comprised of only two file types, .package and .ts4script.

Mods that contain multiple files are compressed as .zip, .rar, or .7z files. These can be opened as folders using 7zip.

Package files are a custom file type containing game assets like XML, 2D images, 3D models, audio, and more. Sims 4 is heavily data driven, so many mods contain only .package files.

A .ts4script contains python scripts that can add completely new functionality to the game.

  1. In the Sims 4, navigate to Menu > Game Options > Other. Enable the options Enable Custom Content And Mods and Script Mods Allowed. Close the game.
  2. Open your Documents folder, then find the folder Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods
  3. Place .package and .ts4script files in the Mods folder.
  4. If you have any .zip or .rar files, open them like a folder using 7zip, then copy any .package or .ts4script files into your mods folder.

While many mods keep working after a game update, some more complex mods are likely to break and require the author to release an update.

Updating mods is as simple as replacing the old mod files with the new ones. Just make sure the old file(s) are deleted!

When a game update is available, you can either update Sims 4 immediately and disable/remove any broken mods, or delay updating Sims 4 until all mods are updated by playing offline. Removing mods may cause issues with existing saves!

You can use Scarlet’s Realm to check the update status on thousands of popular mods.

To play offline, click the menu button in the top left corner of the EA launcher and select Go offline.

To disable auto updates, click the menu button in the EA launcher, then select Settings > Download > Updates games automatically, and disable this setting.
